Preference: Background Info

The title "Preference" came from text that was originally included in the song but later was removed. Again, this song was written with a very basic idea in mind. How do we make our decisions, what shapes our preferences?

The two extremes in decision-making I define as spontaneous decision-making and long thought-out decision-making. On a daily basis I would say that I make most small decisions spontaneously. Currently no two days of the week are the same for me schedule-wise, so I have plenty of opportunities to make rather spontaneous and unique decisions every day.

One can say that these little spontaneous decisions are not life-changing, but I do believe that they reveal your personality in many ways. How did I interact with people when I was really tired the other day? Why did I pack sardines with tomato sauce for my lunch today? Should I make that joke or not (most likely)? Shall I be lazy and sit on the couch or do an awesome workout?

Now, as to decision-making in more long-term issues…here I exercise great calculation, caution and intuition. We don’t always realize that we are making big decisions but in any case when I do, I am careful. This may be typical and everyone is thinking that my “Preference” concept is simplistic but I have seen a lot of big decisions made spontaneously.

I think capitalism really plays on this too say, when people go to test drive a car and then drive off the lot thirty thousand euros poorer with a different vehicle than they had had in mind. Or when people go mindlessly shopping and come home with some huge television or other expensive gadget.

Maybe this spontaneous, big decision-making is actually kind of a high. People feel dangerous and a bit naughty and even if later it becomes apparent that it wasn’t necessarily the best decision, well, that thing is pretty cool anyway, right? I find that this cycle propagates more bad decision-making and less self-reflection.

So, basically the song is describing these ideas in a fairly abstract way and yes, I am also complaining a bit in the song about having had to witness some poor decision-making.

Lyrics:

Clamp down, called me out

I'll drown, sell my doubt

Give me more

Kneeling

Once it sent me reeling

Out of control

Countdown, hideout

Leave town, check the route

Give me more

Kneeling

Once it sent me reeling

Out of...

...Control these

Why do you enthrall me?

Close these doors

1, 2, 3, 4

Slow down, go without

Around, now I shout

Give me more

Kneeling

Once it sent me reeling

Out of control
